The Stone - The Viking Stone - Robb Felder In the year A.D. 998, a young Viking named Leif Erikson, at age 25 began the first of his sagas into a new world west of Greenland. Off the edge of the known world they sailed; 500 years before Christopher Columbus, to the new land that his friend Bjarni had described. When they arrived in the New World they went ashore and built a settlement on the eastern shore. Leif named the new land VINLAND. In late June of the year A.D. 1010, Leif Erikson put together an armada of ships and 150 Norse settlers and set sail on a new saga into the heartland of the New World. They sailed to the west across Hudson Bay, then south up the Red River and into the land that would later become the USA state of Minnesota. They built one of their settlements at a place called Cormorant Lake. The Viking settlers lived at peace with the natives of the tribe called the Ojibwe and traded with them for many years until the Ojibwe tribe became hostile and made war against the Vikings and drove the survivors west across the Red River into the land of the Mandan tribe. In the year 1354, the King of Norway sent a new expedition in search of the 'Lost Colony' of Vikings. They were also pursued by the Ojibwe and in their flight they carved a 'Runic' message onto a slab of stone.
